Alastair Campbell ‘hated‘ his Celebrity Gogglebox experience says daughter

Alastair Campbell “hated” his time on Celebrity Gogglebox, according to his daughter Grace Campbell.

The stand-up performer and her father, the former Number 10 chief press secretary, appeared on the star-studded Channel 4 reality series in 2023 to give their reactions to popular television shows and films.

While Grace, 32, enjoyed taking part, 69-year-old Alastair was far from enthusiastic, with the production process severely testing his patience.

She exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "My dad hated it from start to finish. He did not enjoy it.

"It wasn't that pleasurable because he was in quite a bad mood. My dad's quite impatient; he doesn't understand that cameras take a while to set up and all of that stuff.

"So I enjoyed it, I was very happy that we were doing it, but he was a bit like, 'What is this?' He'd never watched the show before."

However, Alastair, who served as the official spokesperson for former Prime Minister Tony Blair, grew even more annoyed when watching the finished broadcast.

The pair discovered that they featured "hardly" at all in the edit, despite spending hours filming their reactions for the series.

Grace added: "We watched it, and we were hardly in the edit. We were like, 'Did they miss us?"

The appearance ranks "relatively high" in her career, Grace noted, although she confessed to having "forgotten" that she and Alastair took part.

Looking back at the show, Grace says she enjoyed watching her father become "dysregulated and amusing", while facing some ribbing from friends.

Grace added: "I wore odd socks which, like, none of my friends have forgiven me for. They were like, 'Your feet were on TV, and you're wearing odd socks.'"

She hinted that their contrasting personalities mean they may not suit another reality show partnership.

The comedian said: "But I don't think he and I are a natural double-act in the way that some people and their parents are because I think I'm quite chilled, and he likes things to be done quite quickly."

Grace Campbell is now embarking on her third national live tour, The Lady Is a Tramp, beginning on October 30 and running through November and December.
